The 1948 Palestinian exodus 
known in Arabic as the Nakba (Arabic: النكبة‎,an-Nakbah, lit. "disaster", "catastrophe", or "cataclysm"), occurred when approximately 711,000 to 725,000 Palestinian Arabs left, fled or were expelled from their homes, during the 1947–1948 Civil War in Mandatory Palestine and the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. The term nakba also refers to the period of war itself and events affecting Palestinians December 1947 to January 1949, and is synonymous in that sense with what is known to Israelis as the War of Independence (Hebrew: מלחמת העצמאות or מלחמת הקוממיות, Milkhemet Ha'atzma'ut, a term which covers those two events). 
The exact number of refugees is a matter of dispute. The causes remain the subject of fundamental disagreement between Arabs and Israelis. 
Nur-eldeen Masalha writes that over 80 percent of the Arab inhabitants left their towns and villages in 1948, while Rashid Khalidi puts the percentage at 50. Factors involved in the flight include Jewish military advances, attacks against Arab villages and fears of massacre after Deir Yassin, :239–240 which caused many to leave out of panic; expulsion orders by Zionist authorities; the voluntary self-removal of the wealthier classes, the collapse in Palestinian leadership, and an unwillingness to live under Jewish control. Later, a series of laws passed by the first Israeli government prevented them from returning to their homes, or claiming their property. They and many of their descendants remain refugees. Later in the war, Palestinians were expelled as part of Plan Dalet. The expulsion of the Palestinians has since been described by some historians as ethnic cleansing, while others dispute this charge.

During the 1949 Lausanne conference, Israel proposed allowing the return of 100,000 of the refugees, in what it referred to as a goodwill gesture prior to negotiation for the whole refugee population, though not necessarily to their homes, and including 25,000 who had returned surreptitiously and 10,000 family-reunion cases. :577 "Israel formally informed the PCC of its readiness to take back '100,000' refugees on 3 August, making it conditional on 'retaining all present territory' and on the freedom to resettle the returnees where it saw fit." :577 The proposal was conditional on a peace treaty that would allow Israel to retain the territory it had taken, and on the Arab states absorbing the remaining 550,000–650,000 refugees. "The Arab states rejected the proposal on both moral and political grounds." 
The status of the refugees, and in particular whether Israel will grant them their claimed right to return to their homes or be compensated, are key issues in the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The events of 1948 are commemorated by Palestinians on 15 May, now known as 
Nakba Day.


Nakba Day (Arabic: يوم النكبة Yawm an-Nakba, meaning "Day of the Catastrophe") is generally commemorated on 15 May, the day after the Gregorian calendar date for Israeli Independence Day (Yom Ha'atzmaut). For the Palestinians it is an annual day of commemoration of the displacement that preceded and followed the Israeli Declaration of Independence in 1948 
Defining Nakba

During the 1948 Palestine War, an estimated 700,000 Palestinians were expelled or fled, and hundreds of Palestinian villages were depopulated and destroyed.

These refugees and their descendants number several million people today, divided between Jordan (2 million),Lebanon (427,057), Syria (477,700), the West Bank(788,108) and the Gaza Strip (1.1 million), with at least another quarter of a million internally displaced Palestinians in Israel. The displacement, dispossession and dispersal of the Palestinian people is known to them as an-Nakba, meaning "catastrophe" or "disaster”. 
Prior to its adoption by the Palestinian nationalistmovement, the "Year of the Catastrophe" among Arabs referred to 1920, when European colonial powers partitioned the Ottoman Empire into a series of separate states along lines of their own choosing. The term was first used to reference the events of 1948 in the summer of that same year by the Syrian writer Constantine Zureiq in his work Macnā an-Nakba ("The Meaning of the Nakba"; published in English in 1956). 
Initially, the use of the term Nakba among Palestinians was not universal. For example, many years after 1948, Palestinian refugees in Lebanon avoided and even actively resisted using the term, because it lent permanency to a situation they viewed as temporary, and they often insisted on being called "returnees." In the 1950s and 1960s, terms they used to describe the events of 1948 included al-'ightiṣāb ("the rape"), or were more eupheumistic, such as al-'aḥdāth ("the events"), al-hijra ("the exodus"), and lammā sharnā wa-tla'nā ("when we blackened our faces and left"). Nakba narratives were avoided by the leadership of the Palestine Liberation Organization(PLO) in Lebanon in the 1970s, in favor of a narrative of revolution and renewal. 
Interest in the Nakba by organizations representing refugees in Lebanon surged in the 1990s due to the perception that the refugees' right of return might be negotiated away in exchange for Palestinian statehood, and the desire was to send a clear message to the international community that this right was non-negotiable. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has prompted Palestinians like Mahmoud Darwish to describe the Nakba as "an extended present that promises to continue in the future.” 
Timing 
Nakba Day is generally commemorated on May 15, the day after the Gregorian calendar date for Israel's Independence. In Israel, Nakba Day events have been held by some Arab citizens on Yom Ha'atzmaut (Israel's Independence Day), which is celebrated in Israel on theHebrew calendar date (5 Iyar or shortly before or after). Because of the differences between the Hebrew and the Gregorian calendars, Independence Day and the official 15 May date for Nakba Day usually only coincide every 19 years.

Commemoration of the Nakba by Arab citizens of Israel who are internally displaced persons as a result of the 1948 war has been practiced for decades, but until the early 1990s was relatively weak. Initially, the memory of the catastrophe of 1948 was personal and communal in character and families or members of a given village would use the day to gather at the site of their former villages. Small scale commemorations of the tenth anniversary in the form of silent vigils were held by Arab students at a few schools in Israel in 1958, despite attempts by the Israeli authorities to thwart them. Visits to the sites of former villages became increasingly visible after the events of Land Day in 1976. 
In the wake up of the failure of the 1991 Madrid Conference to broach the subject of refugees, the Association for the Defense of the Rights of the Internally Displaced in Israel was founded to organize a March of Return to the site of a different village every year on 15 May so as to place the issue on the Israeli public agenda. 
By the early 1990s, annual commemorations of the day by Palestinian Arab citizens of Israel held a prominent place in the community's public discourse. 
Meron Benvenisti writes that it was "…Israeli Arabs who taught the residents of the territories to commemorate Nakba Day." Palestinians in the occupied territories were called upon to commemorate May 15 as a day of national mourning by the Palestine Liberation Organization's United National Command of the Uprising during the First Intifada in 1988. The day was inaugurated by Yasser Arafat in 1998. 
The event is often marked by speeches and rallies by Palestinians in Israel, the West Bank andGaza, in Palestinian refugee camps in Arab states, and in other places around the world. 
Protests at times develop into clashes between Palestinians and the Israel Defense Forces in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. In 2003 and 2004, there were demonstrations in London and New York City. In 2002, Zochrot was established to organize events raising the awareness of the Nakba in Hebrewso as to bring Palestinians and Israelis closer to a true reconciliation. The name is the Hebrew feminine plural form of "remember". 
On Nakba Day 2011, Palestinians and other Arabs from the West Bank, Gaza Strip, Lebanon and Syria marched towards their respective borders, or ceasefire lines and checkpoints in Israeli-occupied territories, to mark the event. At least twelve Palestinians and supporters were killed and hundreds wounded as a result of shootings by the Israeli Army. The Israeli army opened fire after thousands of Syrian protesters tried to forcibly enter the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights resulting in what AFP described as one of the worst incidents of violence there since the 1974 truce accord. 
The IDF said troops "fired selectively" towards "hundreds of Syrian rioters" injuring an unspecified number in response to them crossing onto the Israeli side. According to the BBC, the 2011 Nakba Day demonstrations were given impetus by the Arab Spring. During the 2012 commemoration, thousands of Palestinian demonstrators protested in cities and towns across the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Protesters threw stones at Israeli soldiers guarding checkpoints in East Jerusalem who then fired rubber bullets and tear gas in response. 
Objections to commemoration of Nakba Day 
Criticism of the observance of Nakba Day in the Israeli media involves claims that it is marked by Palestinians to celebrate their wishes for the dismantling of the Israeli state and the Jewish majority population, and that the more important issue is the failure to solidify a stronger national movement for Palestinian citizens as a foundation for nation-building. Arab citizens of Israel have also been admonished for observing Nakba Day in light of their higher standard of living when compared to that of Palestinians who reside outside of Israel. 
On 23 March 2011, the Knesset approved, by a vote of 37 to 25, a change to the budget, giving the Israeli Finance Minister the discretion to reduce government funding to any non-governmental organization (NGO) that organizes Nakba commemoration events.

A United Nations For the Rest of Us, But Not For Israel

On May 15, 2013 Israel will celebrate its 65th year of “independence” (from whom?), a celebration steeped in historical lies, myths, blood, and the forced expulsion and dispossession of Palestinians from their homeland with the political, economic, and military support of the U.S. and Britain, two colonial racist powers who themselves understand the meaning of killing and ethnically cleansing indigenous populations around the world. . 
Since its illegal and immoral founding no nation has so humiliated, made a mockery of, or castrated the United Nations like Israel, the very nation that owes its existence to the U.N.   In his Proclamation of the Independent State of Israel David Ben Gurion credited the United Nations for the establishment of Israel in historical Palestine: 
He said:

“This recognition by the United Nations (U.N. G.A. Resolution 181) of the right of the Jewish people to establish their State is irrevocable”.
Only two years, one month, and three days after its founding on October 24, 1945 the U.N. with no legal or moral authority legitimized the Jewish theft of Palestine and its abolishment from the map of the world.  In effect the United Nations gave its approval to the Zionist terrorists to launch war crimes against an innocent people, Palestinian farmers and peasants, Muslims and Christians, that resulted in the massacre of 30,000 civilians, destroyed and burned 530 villages to the ground erasing their physical existence but never their memory, and ethnically cleansing 750,000 Palestinians, two thirds of the entire Palestinian population.  The Zionists raped the land and its women and girls. 
The United Nations is just as culpable for these war crimes, genocide, crimes against humanity, and ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians as the list of who’s who among Jewish and Israeli terrorists such as David Ben Gurion, Chaim Weizman, Joseph Weitz, Ze’ev Jabotinsky, Moshe Sharett, Ezer Weizman, Moshe Katsav, Shimon Peres, Yitzhak Rabin, Moshe Dayan, Menachem Begin, Yitzhak Shamir, Ariel Sharon, Golda Meir, Abba Eban, Ehud Olmert, and Benjamin Netanyahu, among many others.


Naturally the first war crime and crime against humanity toward the theft of Palestine was committed by the colonial racist regime of Prime Minister David Lloyd George and his foreign minister Lord Arthur Balfour (Balfour Declaration of 1917) who for Jewish money and support to enlist the United States in World War I gifted a foreign land they neither owned nor occupied to European Jews with no historical, religious, or racial claim to Palestine. 
The Racism and Prejudice of British colonial leaders toward the “dark” uncivilized, primitive, and barbaric people was clearly evident in David Lloyd George’s statement: 
“We have the right to bomb niggers.”
Let us not forget that the greatest imperial and colonial racist war mongerer of all was “the greatest Briton”, Winston Churchill.  He was the man most responsible in the eyes of his government and people, as well as history, for the devastation, destruction, and conflicts in the Middle East that rage till this day.   Since World War II it has been the United States that has carried out Churchill’s policies followed by its blind adoption of Israel’s war mongering and military expansionism in the Middle East.  It’s beyond human comprehension that the most powerful nation on earth has no courage to say no more wars for Israel. 
Churchill set the foundation for Israel’s racist, apartheid, murderous policies that has shackled and ensnared the political, economic, and military might of the U.S. as its weapon of mass Middle East destruction. 
Churchill on the Palestinians:
“I do not agree that the dog in a manger has the final right to the manger even though he may have lain there for a very long time. I do not admit that right. I do not admit for instance, that a great wrong has been done to the Red Indians of America or the black people of Australia. I do not admit that a wrong has been done to these people by the fact that a stronger race, a higher-grade race, a more worldly wise race to put it that way, has come in and taken their place,”
–Speech to the Peel Commission (1937), a British Commission sent to Palestine to investigate the uprising and conflict between Jews and Palestinians.  It recommended Partition of Palestine as a solution. 
The policies adopted by the United Nations since 1947 toward Israel can only be described as policies of total “Appeasement”, submission, surrender, and acceptance of the fact that regardless of what Security Council or General Assembly resolutions are adopted, regardless of any U.N. Agency report documenting the horrors and misery that millions of Palestinians endure on a daily basis under Israel’s occupation, the outcome is the same: 
Israel in arrogance and confidence tells the United Nations and its 193 member nations:  “GO TO HELL”; we’ll do what we want, when we want it, and the world, including the U.S., can’t stop us. 
According to the Israeli Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, head of the large Shas Party, God’s only purpose for creating Gentiles is to SERVE THE JEWS. 
Even more so than the United Nations, the United States has been forced to adopt a similar policy of “Appeasement” toward Israel, not out of love, but out of fear of a backlash attack and withdrawal of monies to finance poetical campaigns by the “Jewish Lobby” that is in word and deed  America’s “shadow government”. 
President Grover Cleveland warned against such Appeasement:
“There is no calamity which a great nation can invite which equals that which follows a supine submission to wrong and injustice”,
Israel can literally bomb the United Nations building in New York City and the end result will be: 
1   The U.N. condemns Israel’s Act of Aggression.  It will call for an investigation of the act which will be vetoed by the U.S.
2.  The U.S. and Europe will support Israel’s act as “Self Defense”
3.  The Arab and Muslim world will in their usual cowardice be Silent, even when all the members of the 57 Muslim delegations are massacred.
4.  The western media will report the attack as “retaliation” for the U.N.’s long history of “anti Semitism” and constant singling out of Israel for condemnation.
5.  Israel, again and again, will never be called to account for its action.
Given such reality rather than hauling the United Nations to the International Criminal Court to answer for its culpability in the greatest unresolved war crime committed in the 20th Century, the creation of Israel,  the peoples of the world must demand wiping the United Nations from the face of the earth given its total impotence to act against one, only one, nation, Israel on this planet. 
We must abolish the U.N. and remove it from the hands of its five nuclear powers, the permanent members of the Security Council whose Veto power can allow the massacre of hundreds of millions of people around the world, from Central and South America, to Africa, the Middle East, the Caucasus, Asia, Australia and New Zealand; all the while the entire world MUST recognize, sympathize, erect memorials, and annually pay tens of billions of dollars to the loss of the only lives that matter in modern history—-Jewish Lives. 
The lives lost at the imperial hands of the five Security Council nations—U.S., England, France, Russia, and China–are insignificant collateral garbage as these nations pursue the mandate of the United Nations—Peace and Security for all in our time. 
Indeed, the question must be asked.   Why does the entire world hate Israel? 
The answer my friend is found in the American owned and run United Nations where Israel is above all nations, immune to accountability. 
Time to abolish the catastrophic organization that led to the “Nakba” of 1948, the Theft of Palestine from under the feet of its inhabitants through Jewish terrorism, murder, and ethnic cleansing of an entire population that till this day are the largest and longest suffering refugees in world history. 
In fact, I would recommend the abolishment of every international organization from the U.N., to the E.U., NATO, the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Conferences, the Gulf Cooperation Council, the Non-Aligned Movement, the Organization of American States, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the African Union, the World Bank, the I.M.F., and any other unmentioned organization. 
NONE of these organizations have saved the world from one conflict, from one civil war, from one invasion, from one illegal occupation, from one genocide or holocaust, from racist Apartheid regimes, from stopping nuclear proliferation, arms sales, slavery, human trafficking, terrorism, civil wars, from protecting the environment from climate change, ozone depletion, air and water pollution, from piracy on the seas, from global exploitation of poor cheap labor, sex and drug trade, prevention of massive human rights, protecting children from slave labor or becoming child soldiers or sex slaves, strengthening women’s rights, improving world education and health, providing clean water and food to the destitute millions, preventing ethnic cleansing, upholding the rights of indigenous peoples, and so much, much more. 
As all these organizations are comprised of failed moral stated the only outcome for these organization is abject Failure. 
The only change in history has come through the will and power of ordinary citizens.
